Old time laundry!

aaah remember the old wringers?   My Mum had one and as a little girl I was fascinated with it.  I wanted to use it, but she warned me it would eat my fingers.   I don't know how many stories I have heard about them, but it seems nearly everyone has a story.   Got to admit that when I was allowed to use it, they sure did get the water out of your clothes!!

Do you have any stories?  Photo's?  Or even still have one sitting in the back shed somewhere?  We would love to see the photo's or hear the stories.  Send them in to our Facebook page at:

www.facebook.com/IndooroopillyLaundromat

Looking for a "modern laundromat" in Brisbane's western suburbs?   Well come on over to Taringa and find us at 26 Hillsdon Road.  Located in the lovely little Hillsdon Road Centre, right next door to Indooroopilly.  You can come by Waverley Road or by Stanley Terrace.  We can promise you - that you won't find a wringer in site to eat your fingers!  But our *express* Dexter Frontloaders spin faster than any other brand or model and will leave your clothes drier, saving you time and $$.

Retail Space for Lease next to Laundry

Our long time neighbour is moving out to work from home and the 41 sqm space will become available in early to mid January.  It sits next to The LITTLE Art Studio just next to us.  On the other side is a laneway behind the gates, that is going to be upgraded to a green space in early 2014.

This is a lovely position as our strip front the busy Hillsdon Road, with excellent passing foot traffic, to us, to the Corner Store, the Cafe and the Bus Stop right outside.  Signage visability is also good.

Currently the space has been used as an office, separated by a partition wall.  With a back door to the carpark.  A small kitchenette/sink is also located at the back.  The space gets 1 carpark out the back.

After being here 16 years we can vouch for this lovely Centre's low turnover of tenants.  It's a beautiful, unique Centre with a leafy peaceful courtyard around the corner in Goldsbrough and the newly opened Abode Cafe.  This is the first vacancy in the Centre in many many years.

So, if you are interested contact the owner Geoff Sexton on 0438 156 195.

We would love a new neighbour!

Laundry - Myths & Facts

Myths & Facts — Laundry

Recently the Whirlpool Institute of Fabric Science posted an article on the Myths & Facts of laundry bleach, detergents and dryers causing shrinkage.  Their findings were:

~~~~~~~~~~~
#1 - Myth: Bleach mixed with detergent helps clean and whiten at the same time.
Fact: Adding bleach with detergent counteracts its effectiveness.
Instead, add bleach during the last 5 minutes of the wash cycle to ensure that the cleaning agents work best.  Our washing machines have automatic bleach dispensers to eliminate the timing guesswork and make sure your whites are dazzling.
#2 - Myth: Using the dryer leads to shrinkage.
Fact: Surprisingly, it’s not the heat from the dryer that causes clothes to shrink; it’s the lack of moisture.
New dryer technology actually measures the moisture in the fabric and automatically shuts off to prevent over-heating therefore reducing shrinkage.
#3 - Myth:  Treat the stain from the front, head on.
Fact: Always treat the stain from the back of the fabric to help push it off the garment.
#4 - Myth:  More suds equals better cleaning.
Fact: Excess suds actually hold onto soils and redeposit them on your laundry.
We provide high energy, high quality detergent that is especially made for Frontloaders.  This detergent if used in the 'correct' quantity will provide the best results for your clothes.  If using you own detergent, ensure that you use the quantities recommended on the bottle to suit either Frontloader or Toploader.
**We hope this Mythbusting session has helped**
Using a Laundromat
Our laundromat is fitted out with the latest and best machines in the world.  Industry leading Dexter has two types of frontloaders, standard and *express*  We purchased the *express* machines as they give better, faster, cleaner, drier results to our customers.  They are very reliable and easy to use.  If you have never used a commercial front loader before, here are some facts and tips to win you over.
  • The Dexter frontloaders hold more than you would assume.  As there is no agitator you can put more clothes in.  Clothes should loosely fill the whole bowl for best results.
  • As the *express* Dexter frontloaders use less water and spin at the highest revolution of all machines, you need less detergent.  Only a quarter to three quarters of a capful please.  As the spin will create lots of suds.  And over sudsing may stop the machine.
  • We provide 'free' high quality, earth friendly, sensitive skin friendly laundry liquid.  Only 1 cap (max) is needed, please measure for best results.  If you bring your own detergent please use slightly less than recommended on the pack, as commercial machines give better and more efficient results with less detergent.
  • In the dispenser at the top is the compartments for detergent, softner and bleach.  We clean these out daily.  If there is residual detergent left in there it is usually because someone has put too much in.  This will flush in to the next load.  So take care with measuring your detergent.  Please remember to put the lid down before starting the machine.
  • Our machines only take 23 minutes.  So fast!  Your clothes will come out drier and cleaner.
  • Remember to check your pockets for loose items, pens, screws, tissues etc.
We hope that this has helped you find your way around our lovely Dexters.  And never hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions.
Enjoy.
How to do Laundry....for men!
Here is a great article about young men learning about Laundry on a Website called -
The Art of Manliness
This is a little taster for you, it's full of useful information even for us female species, for more go to the link above:
One of the first things many young men will be confronted with doing for themselves for the first time when they leave home is their laundry. It’s not exactly rocket science (none of these 31 basic life skills will be, so let’s retire that caveat today), but there is a surprising amount to it — believe or not, whole books have been written on the subject! Today we’ll cover the essential basics in an easy-to-follow question and answer format. It’s an important skill to learn not just because everybody has to do it every single week without fail, but when you know how to do it properly, you won’t ruin your clothes or wear them out too quickly — something a young man on a budget can ill-afford to do.  So let’s get started....
How Often Do I Need to Wash Things?
You don’t have to wash everything you own after only one use. The less you wash your clothes, the longer they’ll last. While a lot depends on how often you shower/how smelly/sweaty you are/how long you wear the garment/the weather, and you can generally gauge whether something needs washing by how it feels and smells, here’s a breakdown of how often on average to wash what:
  • Undershirts/underwear/socks – 1 wear. So have plenty of pairs. Don’t turn your underwear inside-out for another use! But if you run out, and don’t have time for a wash, wash a pair in the sink at night and let it dry for the morning.
  • T-shirts — 1 wear. They absorb a lot of oil and sweat.
  • Jeans — every 4-6 wears. Yes, it is possible to go many months without washing your denim (a must if it’s selvedge denim), and if they don’t smell, go right ahead; they won’t accumulate any more bacteria after 300 wears than 15. You can spot-clean any stains you get (this goes for other clothing too).
  • Khaki/cargo shorts and pants — every 2-4 wears. Khakis don’t hide dirt as well as jeans and absorb more bodily sweat and oil.
  • Button-down shirts and sweaters — 1-3 wears. Very dependent on how tightly the garment fits to the body, the weather, and how long you wore it. When you take it off, give the armpits a sniff. If they don’t smell, put the shirt back on the hanger or drape the sweater over a chair to air out. If it’s right on the border, try a shot of Febreeze.
  • Pajamas — 2-3 wears. Depending on how much you sweat at night (although everybody sweats more while sleeping than they realize — around a liter a night)
  • Towels — every second day (given daily use).
  • Bed sheets — every two weeks. Experts say to wash bed sheets every week ideally, but I know most young men aren’t going to do that. But at least wash them every couple of weeks (if you can’t even manage that, at least wash your pillowcase–especially if you have acne-prone skin). If you need motivation, think of lying around in skin cells, dust mites and their feces, fungal mold and spores, bodily secretions, and bacteria. Not to mention insect parts, pollen, and soil. Sweet dreams.
Thanking our customers
 It's hard when you are an unmanned business like a Laundromat, to catch up with your customers and say 'thank you' and ask if they are happy with everything.  We use our twice daily cleaning visits to chat to customers, find out what they like and dislike.  It's a great opportunity for us to build our business and make it better for everyone.  Suggestions are always welcome.  That is where the Television, WiFi and magazine/coffee shelf came from - you!  Our customers.
Laundromats aren't always the coolest businesses to get people interactive online with.  Our Facebook page has been going since late 2010 with a trickle of likers coming in, so it was with great excitement as we approached the Century milestone.  We just had to thank 'whoever' that #100 was going to be.
And how fantastic that our wonderful 100th liker, ended up being a local business person.  Nicole from Artland Indooroopilly joined our 'likers ranks'  And we loved being able to pop across Moggill Road and give Nicole just a little appreciation gift.  So *thank you* everyone, thanks for coming to Indooroopilly Laundromat at Taringa...even if the name does puzzle you  ;)  Thank you for your custom, feedback and support.
Here's to #200!!!
Find our Laundry on Yellow Pages
Now we know the BIG old heavy Yellow Pages books are slowing fading away.  My Mum and Dad still love theirs.  But, as we all turn to Google and search engines more to find what we need, the printed version is being fast replaced with Yellow Pages Online.  It is a great alternative to finding your 'local' businesses quickly and easily.
So we have a great little advert on Yellow Pages Online, Indooroopilly Laundromat at Taringa.   Go on....click on the link below to find us there.  And if you like?  Take the time to give us a review.  That is if you love what we do, as much as we love what we do!!
Find our Laundry in Westside News!
Wow, what a nice suprise to get last night, when a lovely liker on our Facebook page commented on what a great story on us in Westside News!
A week or so back we got contacted by Jasmin from Westside News, keen on doing a story about Laundromats, just a small interest piece.  May or may not run.  Tell us about what goes on in Laundromats she asked.  Any funny or weird things happen?
So after about a 10 minute chat and a request for a photographer to come out and grab a couple of photos of us.  We didn't think anything more would come of it.  I mean, Laundries aren't the coolest or most interesting places about.  But wow, not only did we get a story in this weeks paper, but a FRONT PAGE photo of us!!  yikes!  We thought we would end up on Page 20 in a wee two paragraph piece.  So click on the link below to read the full story......
Adding to your Laundry day enjoyment
 Adding to your laundry day enjoyment.
Every day we chat and listen to you our customers.  Sometimes we hear a gem of an idea.....and Lorraine Whalley, one of our lovely regulars suggested a small table would be handy to put her coffee or phone on.  We have a double power point in the laundry for you to charge your phones or ipads....so we decided it was the perfect spot to add that little table.
Fits our magazines too!
So come on in sit, relax and enjoy that hour while you laundry is on.
Over Suds? Handy Tip!
So..... ever put too much detergent in to your wash?   At home or in the Laundry???   In modern machines, too much detergent in the wash can cause an Error Code - OVER SUDS.  The machine fills with suds and it can cause overflow and stoppage.
It's a pain, but thanks to the great people at Dexter, we know the trick to reduce the suds.  You have to be quick, but pop some Fabric Softener in to the machine and it will kill off the suds and allow the wash to continue.
This doesn't happen often at the Laundry, the *Express* machines are terrific at handling most things.  However if it does, we hope this tip helps.....when you are doing your laundry with us or at home.
How to wash stuffed animals!
Washing stuffed animals can be tricky.  Can they go in the washer or not?  Can you use regular detergent or do you have to use a specialty product?  Is my little one going to have a melt-down if I take the stuffed animal away long enough to wash it? (Hint: don’t wash those kinds of stuffed animals around nap time or bed time.)
There are many reasons you need to wash stuffed animals: the attack of the stomach bug, they can be dusty from sitting on a shelf, a little too much love from the owner or frequent washing for kiddos with allergies and asthma.
Stuffed animals are like clothes – the less you wash them, the longer they will look new.  After an animal has been washed that crisp, new look probably won’t be there.  But at least they’ll look clean!
You Can’t Wash Your Stuffed Animal in the Washing Machine if:
- They have a music box sewn inside
- They are extremely old and fragile
- They have items glued on – sequins, etc.  Glued-on eyes probably will survive a washing.
- They have delicate ‘clothing’ items on that can’t be removed (think glittery, net-type dresses or delicate little crowns or the like)
- They have small foam balls inside (like Beanie Babies) not batting.
1.  Before washing a stuffed animal, examine it carefully.  Are there parts that need to be removed first?  Any strings that need to be secured?
Stuffed animals are similar to pillows in that they wash much better if laundered in a machine that does not have an agitator.  Washing with an agitator tends to make the animal ball up due to the agitator displacing the batting.
After determining your stuffed animal can be washed, place it in a mesh laundry bag.  The mesh bag gives it an extra level of protection from snagging or being pummeled too much in the machine.
Always wash stuffed animals on the gentle/delicate cycle.  They just can’t tolerate a more aggressive washing that a ‘normal’ cycle would give.  You can use a warm or cool wash but steer clear of hot.  If items are glued on, the hot water might dissolve some of the glue.
After washing, remove from the bag and hang dry or use LOW/Gentle heat on dryer.   – even on low – could potentially melt glued on or plastic parts.  So PLEASE be careful and check within a couple of minutes and often.
All this great advice from:
http://www.mamaslaundrytalk.com
Saturday 17 August 2013
Choose the right water temperature!
The care label on your clothes recommends which water temperature to use.  It is best to put items together that match these recommendations in one machine.
Cold (20°C) Ideal for fabrics that might shrink or fade in warm water and recommended for typical wash-and-wear items. A detergent like Cold Power liquid and powder is specially formulated for cold water washing.
Warm (35°C) Recommended for permanent press items including light to medium colours. A detergent like Dynamo liquid is suited for this temp.
Hot (55°C) Provides maximum cleaning for items that can stand hot water without losing colour or shrinking; especially baby clothes, heavily soiled work or sport outfits. Hot water is excellent for whites, sheets, towels and other household items.
***Notes:
For dark and black colours use cool water. Use a good quality detergent suited to colours.
Don't use too much detergent or fabric softener as it will over suds and leave a residue build up on your clothes - which will make them eventually feel less soft and fluffy.
Hope these tips help you enjoy your time at Indooroopilly Laundromat.
Wash, Dry, Fold
Wash, Dry, Fold.......
                            it can be easier than you think!
Our *Express* Dexter Frontloaders only take 23 mins (approx) to wash your clothes.  These machines are a savings master.   They need less detergent.  They use less water.  They take less time!!  $$$$ and time savings!!
The *Express* machines spin faster, so your clothes come out drier.  This means when you put them in our *Express* Dryers they won't take as long to dry.
~ One heaped basket of washing will only need approx $3  (24 mins) to dry.  That is with a mix of  cotton clothes, towels and normal clothes items.  If it is a basket of towels or heavy items like jeans/jackets, it may need $4  (32 mins) depending on the thickness of your towels.
While all this is happening you will be sitting in comfy chairs and you could be watching TV, reading a book or magazine (provided in store)  jump online (Free WiFi instore) or walk up to the corner grab a drink and sit in the sunny, green courtyard and enjoy the peaceful setting.
When you drying is finished, we have a LOVELY big fold table, so you can have it all folded and back in your basket...ready to head home!   Around about an hour and you are all done!!
Easy, fast, clean and quiet.......
Laundry has never been easier, so we hope to see you at Hillsdon Road soon.
