The right fill level

Tip of the Week!

When using our Top loaders, don't overfill them with clothes - although you may feel you are saving $3 or $4 for another machine...you may find you will end up with clothes still smelly and full of soap powder.  Top Loaders have agitators and these take up room in the machines but are designed to agitate the water *around* your clothes.  If you tightly pack and over fill the machine, the water will not be able to move freely around your clothes to clean and remove stains.  Also if you fill them too high above the water level, these clothes may not even get wet!

One of our empty Top Loaders

Too Full!  (not our machines)
Just right!  (not our machines)
We often find machines overfilled with the clothes poking out above the water level and the soap powder still sitting on top.  It is best to loosely fill these machines, so that the clothes sit below the agitator top and at about the top agitator wing.  This way the water and your soap powder will do it's job.

The only machines that work tightly packed with clothes are our *Dexter* Front Loaders.  They have no agitators and you can pack the clothes firmly to the upper bowl and front bowl.  The higher revolution of the wash and spin, will see your clothes beautifully washed.

Choosing the right water temperature

The care label on your clothes recommends which water temperature to use.  Here is a guide to help you decide -

Cold (20°C)
Ideal for fabrics that might shrink or fade in warm water and recommended for typical wash-and-wear items.
Warm (35°C)
Recommended for permanent press items including light to medium colours.
Hot (55°C)
Provides maximum cleaning for items that can stand hot water without losing colour or shrinking; especially baby clothes and nappies, heavily soiled work or sport outfits. Hot water is excellent for whites, sheets, towels and other household items.

Note:  For dark and black colours use cool water. Turn black clothes inside out before washing.

*always check you labels on Doona's, Blankets and throws - some of these can require more delicate wash cycles*

To minimise shrinking.....

  • Use cold or warm water.
  • Make sure cottons and knits are back in their original shape
  • Many knits and woven fabrics can shrink when washed. Allow for this when buying.
